In the eighties, MADE IN POLAND where among the bands who set the standard for the European ”cold wave” sound. Much more than that I don’t know. I have only heard a handful of songs on a compilation I own, including their three first singles, some live material and a couple of tracks I haven’t been listening to.
The tracks I have been listening to, though, I have listened to over and over, again and again, hundreds of times through the years. The brooding refrain in ”Ja Mysle” still throws shivers down my spine.
I don’t think MADE IN POLAND recorded much more material than that I own, but lately, things have begun to rumble again. Not only did they recently release a two CD collection of rare live material, they also recorded this brand new album called ”Future Time”. And I am SO proud to present my review of this piece of dark, psychedelic rock.

Well. This is the first material I’ve heard from the band since that they recorded 23 years ago. Prominent. The sound has got a quite modern touch to it, with blipping keyboards and other treatments. Also the vocals are constantly shrouded by some robotic effect. The sound is also both darker and heavier than I expected, quite close to KILLING JOKE anno 1997 or something. This album had all chances in the world. To. Fail. But, these veterans surely know what they’re supposed to do to make a post-punk heart melt, and they manage perfectly. I sat with my mouth wide open, absolutely engulfed by what I heard during my first listening. The 20 sessions that followed where no less dramatic, and still, after a month of intensive listening, I keep finding new details, new favorite tracks, new catchy choruses to get hooked on...

And this piece of artistic near-perfection is also one of a great variety. From the stoner-rock influenced riff in the intro song, to ghastly atmospheres in ”Love & Mist”, further into the JOY DIVISION flirting ”No Idz” which drifts into dark ambient and electro-touches and gothic rock, and all with a strong industrial undertone. We also get a long, sad track with 12-stringed acoustics and lush string arrangements.
Vocals alternate between Polish and English. As for the lyrics, I can only speak for the English tracks (of course) and believe me when I say that they’re interesting stories for twisted minds...

Bah, I feel a little silly sitting here with my baby webzine writing about one of Europe’s most influential orchestras ever, when I, at the same time, know that this album will be greatly embraced by all the world no matter what I write. Both old fans and new listeners will soon sing along to new classics like ”Blow” and ”Ball in the Wood”.
Who would be the ”new listeners” I mentioned by the way? Well, if you can’t get enough of pumping basses and the feeling of cold loneliness that can only be pictured by a East European band, this will find its way straight into your dark heart.
"Future Time" might not change the alternative music scenes forever, but then again, MADE IN POLAND's been there, done that already.
